By delving into the intersection between their academic pursuits and their extracurricular leadership roles, participants will refine their transferable skills sought by employers. The PhiGROW program, adapted from the renowned research project at the University of Iowa, promises to be a high-impact educational intervention featuring guided reflections and a comprehensive survey.
According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), college students should highlight essential skills they have gained from their various experiences on their resumes to attract the attention of potential employers. NACE's Job Outlook 2023 survey shows that more than 60% of employers seek evidence of a candidate's problem-solving abilities and teamwork skills. "The key then is for students to not only develop these competencies, but also to be able to articulate how they use them in their classwork, experiential education, student organization activities, and more," says Shawn VanDerziel, NACE executive director. Phi Mu Delta understands the importance of providing a fraternity experience that instills high personal standards, both morally and intellectually. By implementing the PhiGROW program, the fraternity aims to equip its members with a unique opportunity to cultivate leadership, foster personal growth, and excel in their chosen future career paths. Joe Thompson, National President of Phi Mu Delta, expressed his excitement about the new initiative, stating, "We are thrilled to offer the PhiGROW program to our chapter leaders. We want Phi Mu Delta to foster an environment where dreams flourish and ambitions turn into tangible successes. This innovative program will help them embrace the special synergy between their classroom learning and their leadership involvement, thereby enhancing their professional development." The PhiGROW program will be available to all Phi Mu Delta members who hold leadership positions within their respective chapters. Through two carefully guided reflections and a concise survey, participants will explore the valuable transferable skills they acquire through their fraternity experiences. "This program aims to redefine fraternity by cultivating a culture of lifelong civic engagement and fellowship," said Sam Waltemeyer, Executive Director of Phi Mu Delta. "Our mission goes beyond the traditional notions of brotherhood. We want to empower our members to not only excel academically but also become active contributors and leaders of society.” The PhiGROW program is an excellent initiative that aligns with Phi Mu Delta's commitment to fostering personal growth, noble ideals, and a sense of service. It serves as a testament to the fraternity's dedication to providing a dynamic and holistic experience for its members. Legislative Winds of Change: What You Need to Know About Upcoming Bills Affecting Fraternities10/5/2023
Fraternity life is continually evolving, with new challenges and opportunities on the horizon as college campuses bustle with activities. However, some significant changes and actions regarding fraternity life are happening in Washington, DC. The House and Senate are discussing and debating four pieces of legislation that could impact fraternity life.
Collegiate Freedom of Association Act (H.R. 1626) and Freedom of Association in Higher Education (H.R. 2451) The bills sponsored by House Representatives Ruben Gallego and Elise M. Stefanik aim to protect college students from adverse actions by higher education institutions based solely on their membership in single-sex social organizations. These bills protect the fundamental principle of freedom of association, allowing students to form or join social organizations without fear of repercussions. These bills seek to ensure that colleges and universities do not infringe upon the right of students to create or join single-sex social organizations and thereby safeguard their freedom of association. Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act (H.R. 2662) Representative Brad R. Wenstrup has sponsored a bill that focuses on providing grants for collegiate housing and infrastructure. The bill allows tax-exempt charitable or educational organizations to give grants to certain tax-exempt social clubs, such as college fraternities and sororities, to improve, operate or maintain their collegiate housing property. This legislation recognizes the importance of fraternity housing and infrastructure and supports these organizations in maintaining their facilities. It's a positive step towards ensuring fraternities have the resources to provide safe accommodation for their members. Stop Campus Hazing Act (H.R. 5646 and S. 2901) This bill, introduced in both the House and the Senate, addresses the pressing issue of hazing on college campuses. Its main goal is to require higher education institutions to disclose and clearly define hazing incidents. The definition focuses on intentional, knowing, or reckless acts that pose a substantial risk of harm. Moreover, the bill mandates that each institution develop a comprehensive hazing prevention program. The program should include raising awareness, prevention strategies, and reporting processes. The transparency brought by this bill to hazing incidents and prevention efforts is expected to play a significant role in reducing harmful practices. Phi Mu Delta understands the importance of being informed about potential legislation. It reflects the fraternity's core value of democracy and reinforces its commitment to democratic ideals, freedom of association, and the well-being of its members. By actively participating in the democratic process, Phi Mu Delta members contribute to a brighter, safer future for student life on college campuses. On Thursday, September 21, 2023, Phi Mu Delta Fraternity hosted a significant virtual Town Hall meeting that showcased the fraternity's commitment to its core value of Democracy. The event drew representatives from nearly every chapter across the fraternity, fostering open dialogue and collaboration. Members of the National Council, including Thomas Stephen, Mike Doran, Tim Schafer, and Phil Morin, participated actively in this engaging and constructive gathering.
A significant highlight of this virtual Town Hall meeting was the insightful presentation by Michael Gallagher, the chapter President of the Mu Beta Chapter at Ohio Northern University. Michael's presentation centered on Phi Mu Delta's National Risk Management Policy, emphasizing the importance of risk management within the fraternity. Aidan Andrews, Phi Mu Delta's recently appointed volunteer Growth Strategy Facilitator, used this platform to introduce himself to undergraduate members. His presence at the event underscored the fraternity's commitment to supporting its members and chapters' growth and development. The Town Hall meeting featured lively debates on two critical topics. The first focused on enhancing the new member education experience, with attendees voicing a strong desire to ensure that new members establish authentic and meaningful relationships with existing members. This commitment to meaningful connections aligns with Phi Mu Delta's dedication to fostering a supportive and inclusive brotherhood, reflecting its core value of Democracy. Additionally, attendees passionately discussed the significance of preserving the sanctity of the fraternity's three ceremonies. They emphasized the need to ensure that these ceremonies are not rushed so that all new members fully appreciate and understand the profound meanings and values they encapsulate. During the accreditation discussion, members engaged in a thoughtful debate about whether the fraternity's chapter requirements effectively meet the current operational challenges and align with the unique context of various campuses. This Town Hall meeting exemplified Phi Mu Delta's commitment to the value of Democracy, as it provided an inclusive platform for open dialogue, constructive debate, and continuous improvement. It showcased the fraternity's dedication to nurturing a vibrant and meaningful fraternity experience for its members. In line with its unwavering commitment to fostering a safe and respectful fraternity experience, Phi Mu Delta Fraternity actively promotes National Hazing Prevention Week. The fraternity, founded in 1918, has a long history of standing firmly against hazing in all its forms, aligning with its core values of democracy, brotherhood, and service.
Phi Mu Delta's policy against hazing is clear and unmistakable. It states, "No chapter, provisional chapter, student, or alumnus shall conduct nor condone hazing activities." The fraternity defines hazing activities explicitly, encompassing actions that intentionally produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment, or ridicule. These activities, which include the use of alcohol, paddling, excessive fatigue, and more, go against the fraternity's values and are strictly prohibited. Sam Waltemeyer, Phi Mu Delta's Executive Director, emphasized the fraternity's stance, stating, "Hazing does not inspire the culture we want for our members. We believe in the intrinsic worth of each individual from the moment they commit to being a member, and hazing contradicts this belief." Phi Mu Delta encourages all its members and volunteers to explore the groundbreaking research conducted by The Timothy J. Piazza Center for Fraternity and Sorority Research and Reform, which was established at Penn State University in January 2019. The primary focus of the center is to study and learn from the challenges faced by the Greek-letter community, promote advocacy for change, and provide useful tools and best practices to prevent hazing incidents. Phi Mu Delta promotes active engagement with the Hazing Prevention Network in addition to the Piazza Center. This national non-profit organization empowers individuals to prevent hazing through education, advocacy, and community engagement. The fraternity strongly encourages its members and volunteers to utilize the resources and strategies provided by the Hazing Prevention Network to create awareness about the harmful impacts of hazing. Notably, Phi Mu Delta Fraternity actively encourages the reporting of hazing. This critical step reinforces the fraternity's commitment to creating a safe environment for its members and helps prevent hazing incidents. As National Hazing Prevention Week unfolds, Phi Mu Delta remains steadfast in promoting a culture of respect, dignity, and accountability within its organization. By actively participating in initiatives aimed at eradicating hazing, the fraternity continues to embody its mission of providing a positive fraternity experience that encourages high personal standards, both morally and mentally. The Mu Chi Provisional Chapter of Phi Mu Delta at Stevenson University, in Owings Mills, Maryland recently organized a remarkable all-you-can-eat crab feast held on September 8, 2023. Inspired by the annual crawfish boil hosted by their fellow Maryland brothers at the Mu Omicron Chapter at Frostburg State University, this event aimed to bring excitement to start of the Fall semester.
Led by Cody Hanna, the chapter's Vice President of Finances, and Chapter President Camden Hurley, the event featured a tantalizing array of delights, including ample servings of blue crabs, succulent shrimp, and perfectly cooked corn. Set against the picturesque backdrop of the Freshman Quad, the feast delighted students and invited them to experience the flavors that make Maryland famous. Camden Hurley, the Chapter President, shared his excitement about the event's success and expressed his hopes for it to become an annual tradition. "We wanted to provide a taste of home for our fellow students." Phi Mu Delta, nationally recognized for their commitment to lifelong civic engagement, aims to redefine the fraternity experience by fostering a culture of unity and a strong sense of responsibility. The crab feast echoes their mission by bringing students together and reminding them of the importance of embracing shared experiences. The event saw an overwhelming response with attendees reveling in the delicious bites, engaging conversations, and a warm sense of camaraderie.
