On Thursday, September 21, 2023, Phi Mu Delta Fraternity hosted a significant virtual Town Hall meeting that showcased the fraternity's commitment to its core value of Democracy. The event drew representatives from nearly every chapter across the fraternity, fostering open dialogue and collaboration. Members of the National Council, including Thomas Stephen, Mike Doran, Tim Schafer, and Phil Morin, participated actively in this engaging and constructive gathering.
A significant highlight of this virtual Town Hall meeting was the insightful presentation by Michael Gallagher, the chapter President of the Mu Beta Chapter at Ohio Northern University. Michael's presentation centered on Phi Mu Delta's National Risk Management Policy, emphasizing the importance of risk management within the fraternity. Aidan Andrews, Phi Mu Delta's recently appointed volunteer Growth Strategy Facilitator, used this platform to introduce himself to undergraduate members. His presence at the event underscored the fraternity's commitment to supporting its members and chapters' growth and development. The Town Hall meeting featured lively debates on two critical topics. The first focused on enhancing the new member education experience, with attendees voicing a strong desire to ensure that new members establish authentic and meaningful relationships with existing members. This commitment to meaningful connections aligns with Phi Mu Delta's dedication to fostering a supportive and inclusive brotherhood, reflecting its core value of Democracy. Additionally, attendees passionately discussed the significance of preserving the sanctity of the fraternity's three ceremonies. They emphasized the need to ensure that these ceremonies are not rushed so that all new members fully appreciate and understand the profound meanings and values they encapsulate. During the accreditation discussion, members engaged in a thoughtful debate about whether the fraternity's chapter requirements effectively meet the current operational challenges and align with the unique context of various campuses. This Town Hall meeting exemplified Phi Mu Delta's commitment to the value of Democracy, as it provided an inclusive platform for open dialogue, constructive debate, and continuous improvement. It showcased the fraternity's dedication to nurturing a vibrant and meaningful fraternity experience for its members. In line with its unwavering commitment to fostering a safe and respectful fraternity experience, Phi Mu Delta Fraternity actively promotes National Hazing Prevention Week. The fraternity, founded in 1918, has a long history of standing firmly against hazing in all its forms, aligning with its core values of democracy, brotherhood, and service.
Phi Mu Delta's policy against hazing is clear and unmistakable. It states, "No chapter, provisional chapter, student, or alumnus shall conduct nor condone hazing activities." The fraternity defines hazing activities explicitly, encompassing actions that intentionally produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment, or ridicule. These activities, which include the use of alcohol, paddling, excessive fatigue, and more, go against the fraternity's values and are strictly prohibited. Sam Waltemeyer, Phi Mu Delta's Executive Director, emphasized the fraternity's stance, stating, "Hazing does not inspire the culture we want for our members. We believe in the intrinsic worth of each individual from the moment they commit to being a member, and hazing contradicts this belief." Phi Mu Delta encourages all its members and volunteers to explore the groundbreaking research conducted by The Timothy J. Piazza Center for Fraternity and Sorority Research and Reform, which was established at Penn State University in January 2019. The primary focus of the center is to study and learn from the challenges faced by the Greek-letter community, promote advocacy for change, and provide useful tools and best practices to prevent hazing incidents. Phi Mu Delta promotes active engagement with the Hazing Prevention Network in addition to the Piazza Center. This national non-profit organization empowers individuals to prevent hazing through education, advocacy, and community engagement. The fraternity strongly encourages its members and volunteers to utilize the resources and strategies provided by the Hazing Prevention Network to create awareness about the harmful impacts of hazing. Notably, Phi Mu Delta Fraternity actively encourages the reporting of hazing. This critical step reinforces the fraternity's commitment to creating a safe environment for its members and helps prevent hazing incidents. As National Hazing Prevention Week unfolds, Phi Mu Delta remains steadfast in promoting a culture of respect, dignity, and accountability within its organization. By actively participating in initiatives aimed at eradicating hazing, the fraternity continues to embody its mission of providing a positive fraternity experience that encourages high personal standards, both morally and mentally. The Mu Chi Provisional Chapter of Phi Mu Delta at Stevenson University, in Owings Mills, Maryland recently organized a remarkable all-you-can-eat crab feast held on September 8, 2023. Inspired by the annual crawfish boil hosted by their fellow Maryland brothers at the Mu Omicron Chapter at Frostburg State University, this event aimed to bring excitement to start of the Fall semester.
Led by Cody Hanna, the chapter's Vice President of Finances, and Chapter President Camden Hurley, the event featured a tantalizing array of delights, including ample servings of blue crabs, succulent shrimp, and perfectly cooked corn. Set against the picturesque backdrop of the Freshman Quad, the feast delighted students and invited them to experience the flavors that make Maryland famous. Camden Hurley, the Chapter President, shared his excitement about the event's success and expressed his hopes for it to become an annual tradition. "We wanted to provide a taste of home for our fellow students."
